How to Stop Childhood Nail Biting

Childhood Nail Biting

A lot of children bite their nails for the same reason they suck their thumb when they’re an infant – it helps the relieve stress and anxiety or overcome boredom.  And most children will stop biting their nails as soon as they become aware of how terrible it makes their hands look, either on their own or because their friends bring it to their attention.  But the most important thing to remember when considering how to stop childhood nail biting is to keep it positive.

Never make your child feel like he’s doing something bad when he bites his nails and never resort to nagging.  This will only add to his stress and anxiety and increase his nail biting.  If at all possible try to find a way for you child to come to the decision himself that he needs to stop nail biting and you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding.

The best way to help stop childhood nail biting is to use positive reinforcement techniques.  Once your child decides that he wants to stop biting his nails you can help him by offering small rewards for reaching different milestones.  For example, each day he doesn’t bite his nails you could give him an extra 15 minutes of TV time and for each week he could earn a trip to the park.

You must be very careful though that if and when your child slips you reassure him that he’s bound to succeed the next time.  Never let his failure to get his next reward seem like it’s a punishment for his behavior but reassure him that you’re there to help him any way you can.

Excessive nail biting can lead to infected and disfigured nails so it’s important to step in and positively help stop childhood nail biting if you see that your child isn’t going to stop on his own.
